Not all results have been declared in the English local elections, however, the emerging picture is somewhat complicated and, more importantly, implications for the next general election are very difficult to assess.
There is no doubt that Labour is doing very, very badly (losing Lancashire, Staffordshire and Derbyshire so far, and counting is still continuing for Nottinghamshire County Council seats but it does not look good for Labour), and the Tories have done reasonably but not spectacularly well. The Liberal Democrats have made gains and suffered losses, though the LibDem share of the vote has gone up.
The European elections results may tell the same story, or something totally different. There is no doubt that Labour has suffered a huge loss, however it is not entirely clear if this will be replicated in the general election.
