So, what next? I don’t have the faintest idea what is going to happen next with regard to Brexit, after the Government’s very heavy defeat in the House of Commons on the draft withdrawal agreement that had been agreed with the EU. The UK has been stuck in a permanent state of confusion and uncertainty ever since the referendum on its EU membership back in 2016. What I had not anticipated was that the UK would find itself, staring at the impending exit date, without any political unity, coherence, or indeed direction: the country seems more divided than at the time of the referendum. It does not augur well, whichever way Brexit goes.
Whatever happens, future historians and politicians may argue that the eventual outcome was inevitable and obvious, but don’t let them fool you. No one knows at the moment.
