Bernkastel, on the banks of the Mosel, is what many people imagine a typical small German town to look like: the town is full of old timber-framed houses. It reads Altes Haus im neuen Kleid — Schirm dich Gott zu jeder Zeit, which roughly translates as: An old house in a new guise, God protect thee forever and always.
